Geauga County Habitat
Homes
April 2005
Kurtz Bros., Inc.
donated EarthPro™ Premium Compost through the Design Network
for planting beds at the Geauga County Habitat Homes on
Pierce St. in Middlefield, OH. The Design Network is a 20 year
old, non-profit organization of northeastern Ohio women in horticulture,
including those who do landscape design, installation and maintenance.
Others are horticulturists, arborists, nursery owners, garden writers,
lecturers, educators and sales executives. The Design Network designed
and installed over 355 trees, shrubs and perennials donated from
26 area wholesale nurseries for this project and will stay with
the 3 families for one year teaching them how to care for their
landscapes. Also dontated were pruners, lumber for raised beds and
TreeGator tree watering bags. Design Network's
Habitat Landscape Project Coordinator, Selene Loomis, has done research
on the product which convinced her to use it. Since 1988, Geauga
Habitat has provided 52 homes for families in need who are chosen
based on need and the ability to qualify. The typical home built
in Geauga County is 1,200 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms. Partner
families are required to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity"
working alongside groups of volunteers using contributed materials
and funds provided by local supporters of Habitat. In return,
families receive no-interest 30-year loans. This program thus
creates stake holders in the community who pay taxes and are productive
members of the community.

Rebuilding Together USA
Rebuilding Together is
the nation’s largest volunteer organization preserving and revitalizing
low-income houses and communities. Throughout the year- and throughout
America- Rebuilding Together affiliates help ease the lives of thousands
of low income, elderly, and disabled homeowners. The most common
home modifications include installing grab bars, railings, and ramps,
and making improvements to lighting. The result? These homeowners
can stay where they want to be - in their own homes. When
employees of a local company helped paint a two-story house and
clean the yard of an elderly woman who recently underwent surgery
for a brain tumor, Kurtz Bros., Inc. donated waste containers, equipment
and an operator to help with the project.
Adopt-A-Highway (ODOT)
Volunteers have joined
forces through ODOT’s Adopt-A-Highway Program to help beautify Ohio
by picking up litter along state highways. When volunteers recently
participated in the Adopt-A-Highway Program in Cleveland, Ohio at
the Snow Road and I-71 Interchange, Kurtz Bros., Inc. donated equipment
and mulch to help beautify the area thus helping to making Ohio
a cleaner place to live and travel.
Santa's Hide-A-Way Hollow
Terminally-ill children
have been coming to Santa´s Hide-A-Way for approximately 10
years. What started out as a desire to help terminally ill children
and their families, has resulted in an ever popular retreat from
the reality of their illness. The mission of Santa’s Hide–A-Way
has succeeded as it brings families together during a very difficult
time in their lives.
When buildings needed to be moved from Bainbridge to a Middlefield, Ohio location - Kurtz Bros., Inc. donated a flat bed trailer, trucks and operators to help with the move.
