Green Infrastructure

Green infrastructure is a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional piped drainage and water treatment systems that were designed to haul stormwater away from urban environments. As stormwater flows over land, it picks up litter, bacteria, chemicals, sand and other debris and carries these pollutants into our lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands and oceans. Most stormwater drains flow directly into the nearest body of water, usually with little or no treatment. Higher stormwater runoff flows can also result in erosion and flooding which in turn will damage the local ecosystem, property and infrastructure. Green infrastructure is a low-impact solution to manage the quality and quantity of stormwater at its source while also delivering environmental, social and economic benefits.
